One Hour Compo - Round 270 (OHC270)

Outline

It isnt every day I see a whole gaggle of you computer-music types step through those doors, Mr. Phaballiacio mused from behind his desk as he adjusted his wire-rimmed spectacles, then disappeared beneath it. For a moment there was some grunting and banging about, and then Mr. Phaballavio returned, holding a dusty, wooden box, which he set down down on his desk and began to clear the dust from, using his mouth. Yes, the old shopkeep cackled, dust cakes crumbling from his beard, if the contents of this box are as important as the dust on it is delicious, you are all in for something really special.

Gently, the old man lifted the chestnut boxs lid from its base, shaking loose a few cobwebs that had remained post-dusting. Inside was an old MIDI controller. It was once white, in all likelihood, but the color had long since taken on a tinge of plaque-stained yellow. Its keys, too, were unremarkable--just plain old white plastic. If you had to guess, youd say it was maybe an old Roland or a Casio--it wasnt marked with a make or model; at least it wasnt now, if it ever had been. It smelled strongly of cigarettes.

Yes! The old man beamed, pulling the plastic keyboard from the case in which it had spent--in all likelihood--at least two decades. Yes, this should serve the lot of you quite well. Back in my day it pumped out the hottest riffs, and the freshest old-school beats! HOOO-HOOO-BOY, it was my jam! At this point, Mr. Phaballiacio started ballroom dancing with a phantom partner. Drum patterns and arpeggios! Sequencers! Clip automation!

Suddenly he stopped and put the controller down. He looked up, meeting your eager gaze, then looked down once more, and he slid the controller across the desk, into your waiting hands.
