I've chosen a source from one of my very favourite games of the Sega/Nintendo generation; Ristar. I wanted something upbeat so have gone for Crazy Kings, which is the boss music for the game.

"Hi, my pick from PRC249 is Geoscape 2 from the original 1994 PC version of UFO: Enemy Unknown (XCOM: Ufo Defence in US). In my opinion this is the best game ever made, and the moody music suits the game extremely well. I've been playing OpenXCOM, an open source reimplementation of the game lately: http://www.openxcom.org
The music in the game was midi music, so the mid should be coming practically directly from the game. This piece is pretty long with many sections, so there should be enough material for various approaches.

I was able to put this together in an afternoon. I'm trying to learn to make my workflow/process faster. There's some good bits, I think! Very cool source.
I grabbed the bassline and the trickier melody and arpeggio parts from the MIDI (also to speed the process up). In the process the interesting syncopation from the original was altered into a more straight-ahead beat. It's very different to use the MIDI. When I don't use the MIDI, the piece tends to get personalized as a part of the process. When I use the MIDI, I find I could use some time to really edit the result some more. So in a way, the attempt to save time by using the MIDI isn't really working for me (at least yet)!

I was able to do this in a few hours, unfortunately I have some more ideas but I cannot finish it before the deadline.
I originally started with the bass and the pad from UFO and it morphed into the intro. After the guitars the UFO bass is in full swing. The generic chorus was an unfinished idea I did not get back to (and needed to be rerecorded). After the chorus, the transition was plucked from the Ristar source. Then back to the UFO bass and the end.
