@JH Sounds - 6 Minute Journey's are so common place from me, you might as well go "Here we go again".
@Misael.K - I was actually trying to go for 9ths, but it's really depends on how you view it.
@Coloradoweeks - Wait we talking about the time signature or the chords? Because the whole track is in 7/8. Unless i'm missing something. I used 9th's for this, unless people have spotted something else...
@Arcana - Thanks, i do like me songs where the music drops out for a beat, before it gets brought back or another section occurs. It's a nice element of surprise.
@CotMM - Wait people actually think these are 7th chords? I'm not trying to be pedantic, but i'm sure i used 9th chords. Maybe i'm overthinking it...
@Misael.K - Drums really do hit the point home huh? Les goooo!
@Everyone - And now suddenly everyone is posting Muppet gifs lol.
@CotMM - lol
@JH Sounds - Haha, just wait until round 888. Oh wait that'll just be 4/4 lol.
@CotMM - I thought you said Weasley then lol. I'm thinking "Is this a Harry Potter reference?".
@Everyone - Thanks for the kind words!
Now then...
TheVideoGamer - This track is simple on paper, in that we mostly have a looped chord progression with little in terms of major section changes. It's mostly these chords and nothing else, with any variation coming from different sounds that come in, some being subtle. Be it a melody, or a light pad here and there, or at the end, a 303 and drum beat. The idea is that the chords are extremely rich and dynamic to carry the track, thus requiring little in terms of actual development, especially if the chords are good. It starts with some arps, which are mostly 5th's and 7th's, before the second layer of arps (Which is a synth set to i believe also 5th's, but not in the same key), joins in subverting your expectations into a full on major sounding piece. The keyboard chords then come in creating a full on thick texture full of Major 9th's, in descending motion. E Major 9th, D Major 9th, Db Major 9th and then lastly B Major 9th. That's it for chords really, as the rest takes over. Throughout we hear a bassline, a lead melody, some sharp pad chords, and then towards the end a 303 style synth and some drums, playing a more acoustic style kit. The ending is the same progression with the chords jazzed up, and a bitcrush being introduced, which is also become another TVG staple, as a fast and effective way to end a piece. All in all, it's something different and interesting, i'm glad you like it!
Lyra_183 - That's ok, i don't exactly make original stuff all the time either. These AI generators are pretty good i must say, not long before they could take over from actual songwriters lol. Although not original as you've claimed, you entering alone is a feat in itself. So i'm glad you're here. Keep at it, good job!
cotmm68030 - Where's my 2 extra seconds? Come on bro, you're supposed to be our 6 minute man. It should be illegal that it's not exactly 6:00 lol. Anyways, i'm loving these deep atmospheric textures. I know it's not new from you, this is a common theme in your tracks, but this is especially nice, as it sounds like someone having a flashback, but not in a good way. Like a troubled memory of some sort. I nearly said it sounds like in a cave, but some sounds are way up front for it to work for me. I do like the faint Gamelan emulation in this. Weather it's real or not, it's actually....beautiful. Towards the middle it really takes a beautiful turn, sounds...relaxing. I was expecting it to go full dark and scary, but no i feel like doing arts and crafts. Lots of mixed emotions, but none bad. It's actually pretty lovely, and another one of your fine creations. Definately worthy of a vote Loved this, awesome work!
DarkShadow - That waveform is clipping pretty badly dude. It was actually pretty painful this week, i'm sorry. I can stand loud music, but this was...too overblown. Good job though!
THEGREATDESTROYER22 - Loving those panning on the hi-hats! It's quite the rhythmical variations. The drums are both in and out of time, and i'm not sure that's intentional. I do love the choir pads in this, and the thick bassline. It's quite the Industrial Dance tune. The vocals are very distorted, maybe hard to identify without the lyrics, but they are cool. Maybe not what i think of when i see the theme, and perhaps maybe the vocals could be smoothed out so they work better in the piece, but i do dig this, it's pretty great. Good job!
Coloradoweeks - Is that the electric Uke? I saw a discord post on it, so it must be it. Never seen one to be honest, but i like it. But it could also be a guitar sound, who knows it's a bit more..."stringy". The chords are distinctively Colorado, and the singing is...why am i explaining how amazing you sing every week. The vocals are pretty dope in this, in that they are mixed pretty lovely in this! Sometimes you do have a tendency to overblow your voice, in a slightly loud way, but this week was perfect. Although probably not the style, it does have a folky like sound to it, even though not intentional. Mustn't forget the classic Colorado ending, where the sound doesn't properly release. So we get the slightly abrupt endings haha. I'm joking, don't take it the wrong way. Anyways, this is amazing, so mad i can't vote on it, i can only choose 3! Awesome work!
DDRKirby(ISQ) - Ooh this is not your usual style. It's very ethnic sounding, like straight outta Japan. Loving the melodies and it's syncopations, and the Taiko programming. But then we go 180 into....chiptune? Not what i was expecting, but these genre fusions are fire. It's a lovely change, and really builds up from the straight up Japanese inspired idea. I must confess i don't hear the Tanuki reference you mention in the description, but as a piece, i loved it. So many wonderful changes, it's just...awesome. How can i not like this, it's just executed so well! I was delegating between you and DJohn for the 2nd spot, but in the end it went with DJohn. This was still amazing though, so i ended up placing this third! Amazing work!
Dex - Real guitar!? Woo i'm all for it! That is a lovely country inspired chord progression, really goes nicely with the drums. Great string work, really adds emotional depth to the sound. Nice switches in this, lots of cool interesting chord choices. Lead guitar was lovely too, not obtrusive or fading in the background. The drums are hot in this, especially in comparison to the other pieces you've done. But i think this is because you usually use these kinds of beats for more Punk Rock endeavours, and this to me is more Country Rock. I don't hate it, but it's a little more in your face. Still though, i loved the rest, so many great melodies and harmonies, and after relistening i decided to give you this one, well done!
NickC - Nice string and...Koto? I don't know what that instrument is, you will have to enlighten me, but i think it's East Asian sounding. Lots of great strings in this, great melody developments. The drums are too much for this piece personally, i would added more melody elements, to make the drums not feel...isolate and too full. The piano solo thing at the end was awesome, you should have expanded upon that, i felt like i wasn't satisfied it was so short! So much potential, especially at the end, such a great idea with ideas for expansion. Good job!
DJohn - So glad to see you return to OHC i missed you! Amazing guitar chords, such lovely playing, so raw. The vocals are...just wow. I know you are an incredible singer, but i was really feeling it this week. Guitar and vocals, a simple pairing, but it works soo well. Simplicity can be the best sometimes. So up-close and personal in this track. Awesome stuff, so awesome i picked it for the 2nd spot! Amazing work!
obScene - Soft piano playing, that is not as happy as i was expecting, but still very uplifting. Lots of great changes, and some nice metal sounding mallet instruments. Really goes great with the strings, very village sounding. The chords provided by the piano, turn this from a lovely piece into an incredible piece. Damn this is amazing, it's very Studio Ghibli, mixed with Ryuichi Sakamoto. Maybe it's the chords winning me over, and the sounds, but it was just...lovely, and theme fitting too boot. So lovely i choose this on the top spot! Incredible work dude!
Misael.K - Already starting with a thick boi. That drum sound is very muffled, but in a good way. Almost like it's being dampened with a cloth or something stronger. Chords are lovely, i'm just a sucker for augmented chords. Lovely square melody, and really nice bassline. Drums i initially felt they needed some adjusting, but i grew into them on 2nd listen. The 2nd half is just...wonderful. Very airy, lots of wonderful synth sounds and piano playing. Really melancholic. I was expecting the drums to return, but they don't. Shame really, i was just getting into them. Honestly i feel like were working backwords. The first half should be the 2nd half, and the 2nd half should be the first. It's just something i'm not used to at all. Still though, even with my slight criticisms, and jokes, i still think the composition is amazing, and definately worth an awesome vote. Awesome work!
JH Sounds - Jazzy JH returns! This time with an accidental cover or Get Lucky? Or did you know what you were doing, and this was clearly planned. I do love the genre change in this, but points are knocked for it not being 10 minutes like the original mix lol. That was a joke by the way. Is that melody apart of the original? Or is this a new one by you? Either way this is all gonna be pinged in OHC chatroom, so i'll wait until 2am Friday. Either way, i had a lot of fun with this, very creative, and a lot of lovely changes from the original. Well done!
Arcana - The title is familiar, is this an old reference? You are the only one who recognised it as a racoon. I think this is accidental. The chords and drums are lovely in this, but the vocals at the start a bit quiet (Not too quiet, just a little). Perfect in the chorus, but not so perfect at the beginning. Just needs a boost really. The metronome was left in this lol. Lots of potential here. The chords are great, and the drums are really cool, and the vocals are fire, although a bit more tuning could perfect this into something awesome. One or two notes in this do clash with the overall melody, which can make it a tad bit dissonant, but aside from that this is one of your more stronger entries, with lots and lots of potential. Good job!
BJKMenu - This is waaaay late. Like almost a full day lol, but because i'm nice i will give it the benefit of the doubt. This one is full of THICC basslines. It's a full on Bass Symphony. The fill into the main drop was weeiiird, but super satisfying! It makes it quiet...out of sorts and i love it. Whole thing is funky as hell, and has a bit of a 12 bar blues thing going on. Mostly bass guitar and drums, but you treated it as a full on instrument blowout. That instrument is getting everything for this track. Not just a bassline, but a melody and a chord progression too. WTF to that surprise Jumpscare break at the end lol. Lots of potential as well, but the bass playing abilities were very impressive, and i was left with more to like than dislike, so well done!
Top 3 - obScene, DJohn, DDRKirby(ISQ)
Lots of delegating between DDR's and DJohn's, but ultimate DJohn's just hit me for some reason, i don't know. Both are incredible though.
