Pitfall 2 - Theme (PRC240)

Outline

"The first game I ever played that actually had a soundtrack was Pitfall 2 on the Atari 2600. Granted, it was really only one song, but that song was catchy! And on top of that, the music actually told a story: when Harry died, the music became slow and sad; when he picked up a pile of gold, it became happy and energetic. There are earlier examples of "real" video game music (not just ambient sound and effects), but I consider Pitfall 2 to not only be a milestone in game music, but to be the source that made me first realize that video game music was a Thing.

I apologize for the poor quality of the YouTube source; it's the only one I could find that didn't truncate the beginning, didn't include jumping noises, and wasn't played on an off-key emulator. You can find others on Youtube. Similarly, the MIDI below is the only one I found that combines the opening music with the ongoing music; there are others on vgmusic.com (including the "sad" variant).
