Thunder: Really fun take on the piece, it sounds great at faster tempo and chippiness. I think that the high-vibrato chip-synth-pad-thing needs some balancing with the other elements, it gets a little muddy at some spots. Harkinian would be proud of this song's seaworthiness.
TVQ: I am rather impressed with the translation of the source to the genre. Enjoyed how the bassline sounds with your instrumentation. I did find one percussive element a bit distracting: the one that sounds kinda like a sh-sh-sh noise, goes on for a quite a while at a time. Wouldn't be hard to balance it a bit more, the effect will be great when it isn't quite so loud. Good work here.
TVG: Delightful reworking of the song. May not be "the most inspiring," but I find it kinda endearing and nicely executed. Nicely done.

Souperion - Liking the orchestral influences in this song. Liked the switch between the 'first' and 'second' part of the song.
TheVideoGamer - It's a short song this time but with good ideas.
TheVodouQueen - The effects on the background do great in combination with this source, altough using them with this source is not what I expected but it works.
Wassup Thunder - Another interesting twist on this source with much variation in it. Really enjoyed the part aound 2:43, this song.

Well done, everyone, in this round. :D Sad there were only 3 plus a bonus, considering the subject matter. Would've loved to hear more renditions of this song.

----

1) 'Set Sail by Morning' - Wassup Thunder

Pros:

* Absolutely love the "Enough! My ship sails in the morning!" voice sample. Sounds like something from one of the CD-I terrible Zelda games, but I am unsure. Either way, it kind of sets the 'joke-y' tone of the song, even though it all sounds pretty cool to me.

* Find it funny (and a weird coincidence) that TVG went with a Genesis sound, whereas here is the Game Boy Advance sound, haha. It's very pretty. Actually reminds me of "The Wind Scene (600 A.D.)" song from Chrono Trigger in the way the notation hits with the Game Boy sound.

* You've, to me, done enough to this song to make it "your own", with the snare and drum loop works and the slight changes to the key of the melodies, so it's not a complete 1:1 copy of the original. You added a bit more complexities and style choices than I thought most people would've done for an already simple, but quaint and beautiful song. Well done. :D

Critique:

* That said, kind of sad that the voice sample wasn't integrated better with the song itself. :( The song's actual start threw me for a loop by comparison to the sample. Was quite jarring.

* @ 1:30, where the backing melody has that weird T-Mobile ringtone effect going on, but it drags about a measure behind the rest of the tune, unfortunately is off-putting. It's a very cool effect, don't get me wrong, but I wish it just paired with the foreground melody rather than dragging behind it. I think I know the effect you were trying to go for, but it makes the song sound too disjointed at that point, (but got better when it actually did match the melody lines.)

* I really don't have a whole lot more to say, other than I loved the organ(s) in the song, and wish the lower toned woodwind / organ sound came out more (it hit my ears around the 2:30 mark, where I picked up the sound.) I believe it's the backing melody (the bass line) of the song. I didn't start hearing it until this point, and just wish it was a bit more poignant throughout the song.

2) 'Seaport Theme Converted to Genesis' - The Video Gamer

Pros:

* I really like the tempo of this, for some reason. For a Genesis rendition of the Seaport Theme, it sounds way sadder and more solemn as well. Nicely done. :D

* I love the plucky sounds. ^_^

* Sounds like something fit for a bit of a creepy pasta of Terranigma. :0 I was expecting the sounds to start warping and distorting like hell by the 0:45 mark. Pleasantly surprised they didn't. It's just a chill song. :) Maybe an idea for something this Halloween, eh? ;)

Critique:

* Really short. :( I know you didn't have a lot of time / inspiration for this one, but wish there was more to it. Could've played a lot more with things, and knowing how some of your prime work shines and sounds, I know something funky would've come out of it given more time.

* I expected a brass section in this, (like small, slightly blappy or cheesy horns, like you'd get in a Genesis sound). I am unsure why. Maybe something that could've been added.

* Very light-sounding--is a nice effect for the start of a song. :) If you do play around with it some more, I look forward to hearing more. :D The FM effect was also well done, IMO.

--BONUS--

+ 'Shores You Left Behind' - Souperion

Pros:

* Sounds like a sea-shanty to me. ;) Especially with the whining crank-organ sound at the beginning.

* As per usual, your string section is fantastic and beautiful. Keep doing you, my man. :D

* The flute sound is also darling to listen to. It all melds and melts together so well and fluidly. Wish I could've voted for this, but I think this well-fits and suits the shanty-style.

Critique:

* Kind of wanted more 'dueling banjos' play towards the 2:00 mark. Unsure why, but it felt like the song was edging towards that.

* Heard a little bit of horn play at 2:20. Felt you could've used more of that (and we could hear more of that) after the softer break point midway through the song. Also kind of expected to hear some accordions up in this track somewhere. Maybe that's why it "feels" like it lacks the sea-shanty affect...? Every other folk-ish instrument you use is perfect. I think those really are the only missing factors to make the piece a bit more bombastic and playful.

* To go with that, yeah, I think you sold yourself short a bit here with your staple "softer" tones. I know you really love to work with the more delicate sounds, but I think effectively after the midway soft point, you really should've pushed the brassier / harsher tones to really give it that pirate feel, if you get my meaning? Like having songs with soft notation is really beautiful, don't get me wrong. It's ever a delight to hear, but I think maybe for the next one, try to push the boundaries a bit and give us something hard-hitting. :D

Ok i can only really vote for 2 entrants, and out of them i think TheVodouQueen is the better of the 2. Let's go from the top.

Wassup Thunder - The main reason your second, is because well....i can't take this seriously. The chiptune vibes were pretty awesome though, i really liked the square sounds especially translated into melody. Also as well, you didn't just limit it to well...a melody. Chiptune uses a limited range of channels to capture it's authentic feel, which in this case it was done to an advantage. Again though, because you made sure that this entrant was to not be taken seriously, it makes it harder to vote on as a result. The Zelda quotations while funny, was more jarring than musical, and while again i like the style and arrangement, the lack of serious musicality makes it well...look i found this a ton of fun, that's the best compliment i can give you. Well done!

Souperion - *sigh* Why do the best entrants end up being the bonus entries? If you hadn't have made this a bonus, yours would have won hands down, but we are working with limited entrants this round. Now i absolutely love everyone of these entrants, but the reason i like yours the most, is the arrangement suits this composition to a T. It definitely feels like a really nicely orchestrated composition, with a lot of great moments. I will say it's a bit dry in parts, i could do with more reverb, but the rest was just, lovely. Nothing stood out as loud, all nicely integrated.

TheVodouQueen - Can i just say, i feel really humbled that you would take inspiration from me, i find that slightly warming. Now i picked you to win, because i love the creativity here. I might even say your the most creative of the entire bunch. Some of the samples blended beautifully, while others, might be someone else's cup of tea. The drums were lovely too, i love how you made it into a really nice trap vibe. There is one thing that stood out for me, that i felt didn't work for me, and that's the background percussion. If your gonna go for trap, i would suggest, slow it down, or get rid of it, because i feel the bounce of the trap beat, could be highlighted. Again though, that's just me. It's super creative though, and that's really why i picked you to win. Congrats!
