TheVideoGamer - I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again. I’m away for a week (Vacation) and thus I cannot use my normal tools, so I spent my 1hr 30 using the theme to make a GarageBand submission on mobile. Usually I’m either too tired or occupied to make something for OHC so I set a timer the next day, and cook up then, then share in the sharing off channel, however in this case I had the capacity to make OHC, so this was good. My track was basically in the best way possible, atmospheric house (Or even Ambient House, but I know people here object to the use of ambient lol). Thick lush pads, mixed with soft juicy basslines and an assortment of House beats are abundant here. I also used a drum machine to craft a breakbeat to switch it up. Ultimately it was about adding as much as I could without detracting from the chill vibe. This includes a piano, some mallet sounds as well as a soft melody. All in all, whilst I’m not hugely fond of my mobile submissions (I find them a bit subpar, not bad, just a bit unrefined), I do like the work here it could be expanded upon in my normal DAW. Glad you liked it anyways!
DarkShadow - Yep those are DarkShadow basslines alright. It’s such a signature move from you. I will say I wasn’t expecting the saw wave to double the bassline, that’s a unique approach from you. I also like the double time sections here, this is more gabber type approach even if the beats are softer than gabber. The rhythms are also kind of cool especially for DarkShadow. not gonna lie it’s quite loud, which is expected, and also a little dissonant, but it was a lot of fun, I will not lie. Good job!
DDRKirby(ISQ) - Woah awesome pad synths. I absolutely love these chords, I totally feel like we’re in space, even if the images are of a field and some clouds. This is the most ambient I’ve probably heard DDR all year, it’s soo peaceful and chilling. My goodness I don’t know where you are getting these chords from, but I love it. I also love the unexpected switch up at around 1:20, it’s such a cool transcending piece. Seriously, there isn’t a strong melody in the usual DDR sense, but this one doesn’t exactly need it. It’s so peaceful and calming. I know you always excel with high quality productions, but this one is probably my all time favourite from you at the moment, it’s soo cool! So many wonderful seasoned chords, this is awesome. It was insanely hard deciding between you and obScene, so I decided to put you both as joint first place. It was that good, incredible work!
Dex - Piano Dex is best Dex. Lovely major and minor chords here, it’s a really folksy take on the theme, with a very pretty violin melody. Loving the cool changes here, that F major chord in the middle of a D Major scale. The way it dropped into the drums and guitar was also very fire! This is a really strong entry from you, so catchy, awesome work!
Cerfueil - Lapfox, now that’s a label I haven’t checked out in a long time, but I’m all for it! Even though this is probably using modern synths, it totally sounds like it belongs to a Sega Genesis game. The arps towards the middle were pretty as hell, even for a simple major and minor key. It’s quite a cool idea I must say, it’s fast and hectic similar to something along the lines of DnB, but the snare work and melody give me cinematic orchestral vibes it’s pretty great. Nice of you to add rain sound effects to this, it really makes it a little theme appropriate. The only thing I will say is it could do with a bit more refining. I felt some of the arps were a bit sharp in the mix, and also I feel I am lacking a melody in this, which in my opinion could take this to the next level. As a track though, it’s a sick idea, with lots of potential, so don’t be discouraged. Good job!
BJKMenu - Ok this is interesting, it sounds like a synth emulating a guitar, it’s both weird and fascinating. The falling arps at 0:15 were very weird but very fascinating, this to me is the musical equivalent of ADHD, there is so much going on for a minute, there’s very little to develop for each section. I hear something cool for 10 seconds, then you move onto the next lol. The guitar solo at the end….well it was a solo, there’s no question about that, but it was quite the…weird solo. I mean this gets bonus points for going outside the box, I love it when people make stuff that’s unusual or weird, however taste is personal, and this seems a little…too chaotic. I am a fan of music having a little bit of a base anchor, so it doesn’t just become one confusing mish-mash of ideas. Still though, it’s a very cool sound, that is quite different for compo, and I for one do embrace the experimental sound, so don’t be discouraged, keep at it! Good job!
Relax.D - Oh hey you’re a 2HTS regular! It’s nice to see you in OHC! loving the lo-go dubstep vibes. It’s a really soft bit hard hitting bit of EDM. Loving the weird delay on the chords, and the chopped up synth, that sounds like it’s emulating a vocal. It totally brings a cool unique flair to the genre. It feels both modern but also a little bit oldschool, it’s great. It doesn’t feel like a structured piece, in some ways you almost played this live like a jam, even if it isn’t one, it’s just different. It’s not so much a melodic piece, or does feel a bit empty maybe in parts, however in this case I feel it works to an advantage. The sparse arrangement is actually beneficial in this case. The only real critique i have is that there is some unnecessary kick layering going on, which amplifies the sound and makes it louder than it really is, but that’s about it. I thought about this for a long time, and honestly I felt there was more to like than dislike, it’s pretty cool. Well done!
NickC - Cool piano plinks. Feels very pretty, but very empty and open. Soft and minimal always works for me. Maybe a bit close to Koekepan level of minimal (More specifically his really minimalistic pieces, with very little to no sound. Sorry Koekepan for outing you like this, but I needed a comparison I’m sorry). Initially I loved it, it was sad but pretty, that is until the end. It ended up sounding very dissonant and weird. A soft soothing melody getting completely mangled at the end. I don’t know I felt you had something, but then lost me sorry lol. Good job though!
Misael.K - Ooh that was sudden. Not too loud, but a bit of a mild jumpscare lol. Sick chords and beat! It’s got that classic Misael melody, but mixed with a bit of a 70s prog rock backing, despite the lack of electric guitars. But not every track needs them and this is a perfect example it’s lovely stuff. I’m super into the chords it’s pretty awesome, and the melody compliments it perfectly. Yeah sure I could do with stronger beats, but realistically for this track, the melody and chords carry enough weight on their own I don’t think it’s really needed. This was some fine stuff from you, super catchy as hell. Although I decided to place DDRKirby and obScene joint first place, because both were so good I couldn’t separate them, that makes you technically 2nd place, but due to the nature of voting I ended up placing you third! Long story short this was amazing, incredible work!
Arcana - Oh man this is almost 6 minutes, that’s extremely rare for you dude. But live performances are always good, definitely one of my favourite things about your music. Loving the chords and how it’s processed within the synth, it’s so cool and dynamic. I also dig the white noise it adds to the aesthetic super well. There isn’t much lyrical content here, so I definitely feel it’s all about the melody/harmony in this one, which I’m totally ok with. After all, what’s a good lyric without a good melody. The vocal effect is very cool, I feel like I’m in space, it’s trippy. The way the melody and chords are played is also interesting, as I don’t know what rhythm it is until the clap comes in. I do love the mix in this, normally it can be loud or quiet, but in this case, it’s actually kind of perfect. Although not much lyrically, it’s still adding a lot emotionally. The vocal effect is just so damn cool, this is a really strong entry from you, so much so that I’ve decided to give you this one. Although I decided to place DDRKirby and obScene joint first place, because both were so good I couldn’t separate them, that makes Misael.K technically 2nd place, and you 3rd. but due to the nature of voting I cannot vote for you. Basically it was awesome stuff from you, awesome work!
obScene - It’s not usually the hardware for me, sometimes it’s just my weird brain playing tricks on me lol. That is one hell of a pretty piano progression, but then again I am listening to obScene, when have you ever disappointed lol. Always a sucker for polyrhythms, really makes it both folksy and cinematic, but in that classic obScene way. Drum work was surprising, but honestly really nicely done for this piece. I just feel like going on an adventure in this one. The synths have surprisingly a lot of release on them, so it sounds like a wailing guitar, but that’s a lovely thing, not a bad thing. This was just another awesome obScene piece, those melodies are gorgeous! It was insanely hard deciding between you and DDRKirby, so I decided to put you both as joint first place. It was that good, incredible work!
Top 3 - obScene, DDRKirby(ISQ), Misael.K.
Both DDRKirby’s and obScene’s entry were fantastic, so I really couldn’t decide which were deserving of first place, so I made them joint first place. This effectively makes Misael.K 2nd place and Arcana 3rd place. It was a bit tough I must say. Congrats all anyways!
Dex also deserves to be on the list, I loved that one as well.
Awesome - DDRKirby(ISQ), Dex, Relax.D, Misael.K, Arcana, obScene.
