Hoboka - Excellent piano, nice strings. There's no real ending.
DjMokram - Great song, good sampling and much variation with the source.
Meccaneer - The longest song of the set. At 1:50 the silent is too long and the restart doesn't fit with the genre. I like that trancey sample after 4 minutes. The last part is very good.
Sir Nuts - I liked the background a lot, fits really well with the rest.
Obtuse - I like the samples you used, it's a relaxing song. The ending is a little too long.
Trism - Nice and unusual start. The whole song sounds like a good introduction.
Chickenwarlord - There's a lot variation in the song, altough the song is looping a section of the source. Ending is abrupt.

Sggod89 - I cannot vote for this song, but I like it a lot. It is a very qualitative mix.

Very hard voting, everyone deserves more points. I can only vote one song first, one song second and one song third.

Thanks for the songs.

Reasons for choosing these top 3:
I felt Lost Sight was very fresh. It had a good use of ambient space. And I love organ-like sounds. Aggressive Parasite had energy and was pretty straightforward and had decent instrumentation. Mitochondrial Groove was definitely groovy and also has plenty of energy. If anyone wants reasons why I didn't pick theirs or seeks additional feedback feel free to email me.

DJMokram's feels the most TRUE to the Parasite Eve universe, thus to me it felt the most relevant for this compo (that and his original material is killer)

Meccaneer did a lot of varying it up, and not half-badly I'd say. Pretty good studio chops too.

SiR_NutS's was full of energy and production pro-ness - but I felt that it could have used a darker atmosphere. This is TOTALLY subjective. The track itself is awesome, but the other 2 people, I felt, hit the mark just a little bit better. Really good effort and ideas though.

Over-all everyone's remixes were pretty cool and creative - I enjoyed this compo a lot! See you guys next round (hopefully)

DjMokram - Love the slow intro to the song and less obvious use of the main 'hook' of the source material. Great effects towards the end of the track as well.

Sir_NutS - Very punchy beats at the beginning leading into the main parts of the song. I like the departure from the obvious parts of the source at about 1:30. Short but very sweet.

Obtuse - Great ethnic feel to this with the woodwind-ish instruments, the birds in the background add nicely to the feel as well. The drums come in at just the right time and are nice and punchy.

Good work by Obtuse, to not only be the first one to enter but also to keep the sort of groove to the original with the instrumentation. I feel that the ending could have benefitted from less aggressive drums.
Sir_Nuts, as usual has a very solid entry. 1:29-1:51 felt like the added secondary melody didn't quite jive with the piece as well and lost a bit of groove there.
DjMokram had unquestionably my favorite arrangement. The one failure is that the instrumentation has a bit of a mood swingy-nature. I didn't feel like instrumentation choices made smooth transitions with the arrangement. Nonetheless, I liked the Phrase of Aya and Main Theme cameos.

Meccaneer: A lot of solid ideas here, but it felt a bit too meandering with all those solo pads and drums breakaways for my tastes. Probably the heaviest on atmosphere of the lot.

Hoboka: Nice use of pedal point in the repeated piano refrain. That string sample attack delay when they play the melody is a bit unsettling and detracts from the mix.

Trism: Slow paced ambience. That last 9 seconds could have probably been cut pretty easily as it mars some of that slow moving pad work that created your general soundscape. You might want to play with your lead melodic instrument more with regards to timbre shift and interpretive noodling. I noticed that you decided to not have any drums which means that you should pay a LOT of attention to how all your pads sound together. If you're going for slow moving ambience like this, you want your pad textures to be constantly shifting and varying slightly to keep interest to the active listener. Good luck on your future PRC's. Hope to hear more from you soon.

SSgod - that slap bass is like something directly out of a NYPD crime TV show. So perfect choice for a Parasite Eve mix. 1:57-2:34 I felt like the melody could have been brought up in the mix a bit and your bass toned down a bit.

Just want to say there were some outstanding remixes this round, I almost feel bad having to vote on a top 3. Hope to hear more remixes from all you guys in the next rounds!

Hidden Identity by Obtuse: I assume you put the bird sounds in there because this is the theme they play while in central park. Good choice of synths, they complimented each other quite nicely. Thought the drums were a cool touch, tho the fills were pretty generic. Definitely a cool remix man, I enjoyed it!

Lost Sight by Trism: First off, thanks for submitting to the PRC, we hope to hear more from you! This has a great atmosphere to it, like I'm floating through space! Everything sounded great. I would have liked to have heard some sort of drums tho, even if they were sublte.

Mitochondrial Groove (Fast Edit) by Chickenwarlord: I really enjoyed the more unique approach you took on this compared to everyone else. Some really good energy in this and it was definitely groovy! I think the production could have been a little more polished tho. Good listen nonetheless!

Aggressive Parasite by Sir_NutS: This track is beast! The drums sound great. I'm really diggin' what you did with that main melody, sounds great. I really enjoyed the end (2:06), even tho you were more or less just peeling back the layers, it would have made a pretty nice little interlude had you chose to keep it going. Awesome entry tho fo shizzle.

Temporal Perspective by Meccaneer: Diggin the melodic vibe this has. The sub bass kick was a great choice. My favorite part was definitely the section at around 2 min. The bit crush sounds actually sounded really good, I wish that whole part lasted a bit longer! Then end was also a great change up, fantastic climatic end.

Disputed Perspectives by hoboka: That intro synth instantly reminded me of Metroid Prime haha This remix is amazing man! When the drums drop in, I was really enjoying this! All the levels of intensity of this remix is awesome. From the slow and dark to the emotional climaxes. Really was a journey listening to this and you are getting my first place vote!

Spontaneous Combustion by DjMokram: Quite an interesting direction this was. From the soft and somber to the light and energetic. The main theme was quite grooveh! Even tho it was all over the place, I felt you did a great job meshing it all together and making it work. Definitely a great listen man!

Pretty much all the entries were enjoyable to listen to. Very chillin stuff for the most part, I like thiskind of thing.

As for the votes:

1-DJ Mokram: Liked your arrangement the most.
2-Obtuse: Very inventive, I liked the arrangement here as well.
3-hoboka: Third place was actually the hardest to vote for because I didn't have issues with the songs for the most part. hoboka gets the third place because his song managed to have a distinct mood and also a good amount of arrangement.

gj everyone.

ROUND #218
----------------

Awesome source pick by sggod89 and incredible turnout for this round. :)

1st place - Trism: your debut contribution to the PRC made a lasting impression, let me tell you.
First off, it was a bold decision to go for a purely ambient piece with next to no percussive elements.
As in a lot of ambient songs, the piece develop slowly and takes time to get to the main melody.
It's like a journey that leaves you longing for that eerie little tune lost among a dense forest of atmospheric pads.
Truly inspiring and courageous take on the source, and imho a lesson in how to build immersive soundscapes.
Hope to hear more of your work in the upcoming PRCs.

2nd place - hoboka: while simple at first glance, this interpretation is at times bordering on genius.
You've managed to bring a layer of dissonance that not only is reminiscent of the original game soundtrack, but also creates a believably disturbing atmosphere.
This piece is a captivating blend that fills the listener with an unsettling feeling, mix between wonder and doubt.
Very interesting and fitting take on the source here.

3rd place - Obtuse: enjoyed how you combined genres, chord variations and environmental SFX into a polished marriage of inspirations to create this arrangement.
You played it safe at times with the rhythmic patterns, but the piece flows relatively well and preserve its dynamism all the way through. No proper ending though, which was a bit saddening, but not dramatic. Nice one.

----------------------

Nice bonus mix from sggod89. Loved the chilling tone and the EH voice clips which fit really well. You're improving with each new entry. I'd have voted for you if it was allowed. ;)

Lots of awesome songs this round but only 3 spots to fill. Though decisions all around.
Great work folks. Here's to many more PRC like this one in 2012. :D

See y'all next time! ^_^
