Tough vote.

NickC's string tone won it by a nose.

The DarkShadow song this week was really great. I think it was the shift to the square waves in the middle and the melodic changeup that really did it for me. It was different and engaging and led things into a different direction. Like the breakdown from the strange scale to a more traditional scale was really cool. I thought this was super engaging.

DDRKirby does solid stuff every week, but this one was fun and deserved a vote. Just good quality all around, gives me rushing on a surfboard on an NES game memories.

NickC had great instruments and they were interleaved in such a nice way. Good instrument choices and nice job, you keep branching out each week and it still continues to sound really good.

All comments replied to on discord, so onto the voting! This is probably the shortest compo i've ever voted on, during my time here lol.

TheVideoGamer - I honestly can't say too much, as i made this in very quick succession, during a horrific case of the flu. Illnesses are to be expected, but not so much that they make you submit early, resulting in a simple entry, from around 50 minutes of work. If i wasn't so sick, i would have done a lot more, and made a more detailed entry, but because i was tired and miserable as a result of being sick, i cut it short and sent what i have. Don't let the 6 minutes deceive you, it's very simple. I took a chord progression (Of what feels like 6 chords, although in reality it's like 3 or 4), and stretched it to around 1 minute and 20 seconds. Each chord lasts for 8 bars, and is designed to be this epic almost choral like piece. There is 3 layers total, including 2 pads and a choir, with one being a textural pad, the other being more of a straight saw pad, and the choir adding thickness and space. There is also some rain sounds for theme accuracy, which is processed with distortion, an arp that comes in around 2 minutes in, that carries a bit of the rhythm (As well as it's distinctive blip throughout each arp, which is the result of the preset, and not me), and lastly a piano that adds a cool delay effect. Top it off with reverb and filters, we have a somewhat cool piece, that gets the job done. Next week if i feel better, we'll have a more nuanced piece from me. Still though, glad you listened to it!

DarkShadow - The return of the saw synths from you! Lots of cool rhythms, and arp action here. The square synths are Crazy Bus level here lol, sorry. Waveform is insane, yet this is surprisingly not too loud. Although saying that i am not well, so listening might be affected. It's an interesting idea, but i feel it can be a bit overblown in the amount presented here. Despite that, i am not heartless enough to single people out in the needs work section, so this is a well done from me!

Koekepan - Nice sine work here, feels very open and desolate. Lots of empty space in this, feels like the lack of accompanying sound is deliberate, but it does develop throughout, allowing for a more raindrop kind of mood, than a purely empty mood. These are the kinds of pieces that do require your attention, the lack of sound can be off-putting to some, however i am not one of those people, as this is surprisingly lovely. The more background sounds you add, the more it reduces the emptiness and makes it more of a nice free flowing texture. It feels almost like i'm in a state of mind. I could sit back and forget all my thoughts to this. Really great stuff, well done!

DDRKirby(ISQ) - I see you also used rain noises as well! Although the one thing you did that i didn't, that is honestly...very impressive, is you sequenced it into a rhythmical noise pattern, which i love. But it was a transition, and not a sudden cut, so whatever it was (Likely a gate), it was creative genius. The chords are great, lovely balancing of the retro NES with modern production values. I can't hate your pieces, every one you do is always just a catchy bop. This one was great, lots of lovely changes. It was so good i placed it 3rd! Amazing work!

Coloradoweeks - What a lovely opening fill! This is a 3/4 Colorado style, not expected at all. The vocal seems to be layered on top, than played alongside (I've noticed). Again i'm not well though, so my ears are a little muffled. I know i should have waited until i was better, but that could have taken more than a week. It doesn't matter anyways, unless it was insanely loud, mixing is the least of my concerns, composition is important. The guitar work is absolutely fire, and the synth embellishments are really cool! Vocal work is incredible as always, but what's especially noteworthy is how long you can sustain those notes for, in such a smooth way! I feel this is NIN inspired for sure. Awesome stuff, in fact so awesome i've placed it 2nd! Amazing work!

NickC - Bittersweet strings! My favourite! Not expecting this direction, but i love it. The transition to solo guitar was also really cool, it adds an emotional depth to this piece. When you don't decide to add your wild and wacky seasonings, that make it deliberately dissonant, you can come out with some seriously beautiful melodic work! This is no exception, so many wonderful melody ideas, and some great instrumentation. This was definately some strong orchestral styled work from you, loved it. In fact it was so good it's going on the top spot, incredible work!

Arcana - I've noticed that even with only 8 entries, we still get so many long pieces, in the 5-6 minute range. Granted i contribute to that, but i still find it amusing. It never seems to happen when there is 15 entries lol. It's probably the longest Arcana entry i've heard this year. I like the soft arp work, and the cool drum sounds. The vocals are masking the background elements, however they don't make it unnoticeable, it's more so the vocals could be toned down a little. The chords are actually really great! I can tell this is all live performed, than programmed like some of your entries. In the end i gave this to you, as i find there was more to like than dislike. Well done!

Misael.K - Lot of lyric stuff this week, especially for only 8 entries. I feel like for such a short round, people went all out on the singing and the length lol. Not expecting Misael going Punk rock, but i'm all for it! That is a lovely synth melody, and the vocal lines are not only clear, but they blend so well with the rest of the instruments! Sometimes the vocals are so blurred with the rest, it becomes hard to identify with the rest of the sounds. This one was great, because the vocals were sick! I love the melody in this, it's got so much variations, and a lot of really nice lyrical writing. This was just lovely stuff, awesome work!

Top 3 - NickC, Coloradoweeks, DDRKirby(ISQ).

If i had to time this, it would have probably took me 40 minutes for the whole of the voting, compared to what could easily be 1hr and 30 minutes. Shortest yet lol.

Misael.K is also a contender for the list.

Awesome - DarkShadow, Koekepan, DDRKirby(ISQ), Coloradoweeks, NickC, Arcana, Misael.K.

Needs Work - I would never single someone out, not matter how much potential it has, so DarkShadow is not on this list, effectively making this empty. So congrats guys, another round where nobody made it here!
